Summoning a pet into free mode isn't really a problem. Apparently the behaviour before 2.1 when they were summoned in 'free fight mode' was a bug. The default behaviour when a pet is summoned is that they will be placed into 'free mode'. I remember an interview where Yoshida said someone proposed a 2nd healer class and they were 2 months away from something, he was afraid they didn't have time but the team assured him it would be ready, and thus was born the (half-baked) Scholar.
